I Have A Website, But What Do I Do Now?
After hours of work you have just launched your shiny new website. You are waiting with anticipation for the results – new visitors, new orders and new business. But nothing is happening…
Why is nothing happening? There are a number of factors affecting the interest in your website:
No-one knows about your website - you may have launched your website, but have you actually told anybody?
The web’s ripple effect - the web is such a large entity that small events such as the launch of a new website take time to ripple through. Information on the web is basically shared via search engines, third party websites, social networks and peer to peer communication. Like all information, it takes time to filter through to various people.
Your website is not ranking in any search engines - telling people about your website is one method of generating interest, but if you are trying to gain new customers you really want to be found through search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft’s Bing) and other mediums of marketing such as print. It is becoming increasingly popular for people to initially search the web before going out and finding a product or service. Therefore by being found in search engines you can potentially generate interest in the website and your business.
What can I do about it? Marketing your website is the best way to generate interest:
- When you launch your website let people know. People have a tendency to talk, therefore let others know and hopefully they will pass on the information.
- Sign up to social networking websites such as Twitter or Facebook. Create pages and groups with people who have similar interests. Invite other people to join. Refer them to your website.
- Create accounts with various online business directories. Include a link to your website. Inbound links help your search engine ranking.
- Utilise other methods other than web-based options. Print media is still a popular format for advertising. Include your website address on your business cards, pamphlets, brochures, stationery and printed ads.
- Ensure you are getting found through search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. This may mean that your website needs to be modified through Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
- Pay Per Click advertising is another option for being found within search engines. This method can potentially display your website in a search engine almost immediately after signing up and paying for an account. Examples of pay per click advertising sources include Google’s AdWords and Yahoo’s Search Marketing.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines via natural search results for targeted keywords. The higher a page ranks in the Search Engines the earlier it will appear in the search results. A higher ranking page is likely to receive more visitors to your site and therefore improves your chances of doing business.
There is no point in having a website if the major search engines don’t know it exists. 5 ways you can help Google find your website are:
1. Ensure your website works in all browsers
2. Ensure any ads on your site, such as Google AdSense ads are relevant to your website content
3. Add your business’ physical address to each webpage. Include your post code and state
4. Add information about your location in your website content eg “We have been serving the Perth metropolitan area from our office in Kewdale since 2007”
5. Link your website or blog to that of local bloggers and ask them to do the same for you
Search Engine Optimisation is an ongoing process. You constantly need to update your site and tweak it to stay ahead of your competitors Want to know more about Search Engine Optimisation? Contact the team at insilico on 9200 4431
